For urgent support, the following organisations offer free anonymous counselling services. Lifeline and 13Yarn both operate 24 hours 7 days a week. QLife operates from 3PM to midnight every day.
Formerly the AIDS Council of NSW, ACON is now a wide-reaching community organisation. Primarily funded by the NSW Ministry of Health, ACON is dedicated to supporting people of diverse sexualities and genders and committed to ending HIV for everyone in our communities. ACON offers a huge array of support services and research and health promotion and community outreach. ACON is based primarily in NSW but offers services at the local, state, and national level.
The Australia & New Zealand Tongzhi Rainbow Alliance is a not-for-profit organization that works to support the LGBTQIA+ community in the Chinese Diaspora and provide a safe space for community members to engage, connect, and thrive. They aim to promote inclusivity and connect community through programs and services including social events, counselling, and education.
The Australian Queer Archives (AQuA) is a volunteer-run, non-profit, community-based incorporated association in Melbourne. AQuA collects, preserves and celebrates material from the lives and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex, queer, Brotherboy and Sistergirl (LGBTIQ+) Australians.
BlaQ is the peak organisation for Aboriginal Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer + Sistergirl and Brotherboy (LGBTQSB+) Peoples and Communities in NSW. They are a Redfern-based, aboriginal community-controlled organisation that works to nurture, support, affirm and celebrate LGBTQSB+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and promote safety and inclusion for all.
Formerly the National LGBTI Health Alliance, LGBTIQ+ Health Australia is the national peak health organisation in Australia for organisations and individuals that provide health-related programs, services and research focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people and other sexuality, gender and bodily diverse (LGBTIQ+) people and communities.
As an organisation, they conduct and support health research for LGBTIQ+ populations. Additionally, they provide services ranging from peer-to-peer support, to workplace training and resources, to mental health and suicide prevention initiatives.
A Western Australian organisation that works to promote the wellbeing of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual and other sexuality, gender and bodily diverse people. They provide counselling and support services as well as diversity training for other organisations.
Minus 18 is a company that work to champion the wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ youth in Australia. They provide community support through youth programs and education and training resources for the families of LGBTQIA+ young people and those who work with them.
The Queensland Council for LGBTI Health (QC) is a community led and community owned health and wellbeing service for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Sistergirl and Brotherboy people and communities in Queensland. They provide many health and wellbeing programs and services, as well as running health promotion campaigns and engaging in collaboration with research.
THH is a health organisation that serves LGBTQIA+ populations and all people living with HIV. They offer a variety of services in Victoria and South Australia, as well as supporting research, community programs, and promoting inclusion and diversity more broadly.
TGV are a trans-led, community organisation that work with and for the trans and gender diverse community to create positive change in human rights and policy development. TGV recognises the right of all members of the trans and gender diverse community to equality in all areas of life, including housing, education, work, health services and legal representation.
WAAC (pronounced like 'whack') is a non-profit organisation with a vision for a world of positive healthy people in inclusive, connected communities. Operating in WA, WAAC provides health care, community support, and outreach programs to LGBTIQA+ populations in the region.
Equality Australia is a national organisation dedicated to equality for LGBTIQ+ people. Founded in the lead up to Australia’s plebiscite to legalise same-sex marriage, they have continued to advocate for the rights and wellbeing of LGBTIQ+ communities in Australia. They combine legal, policy and communications expertise with thousands of supporters to ensure LGBTIQ+ people are treated with dignity and respect.
Trans Justice Project “are a national movement standing up for freedom, justice, and equality for all trans and gender-diverse people.” They are a trans led national campaigning organisation working to build a trans-led movement to fight for freedom, justice and equality for all trans and gender diverse people.
They have to date organised events, snap actions, and rallies in support of trans justice issues. They also conduct community research and have produced numerous great resources including factsheets and handbooks about disinformation, the anti-trans movement, and how to support trans and gender diverse people.
The Australian Human Rights Commission is Australia's National Rights Institution. One of their key functions is to act as an independent third party and investigates complaints about breaches of human rights and discrimination. You can submit a human rights complaint to them, which they will respond to via conciliation, a process which is further explained on their website. AHRC does not provide legal representation and cannot act as an advocate for complainants. There is no cost associated with making a complaint and you don't need legal representation to do so.
CLC NSW is the peak representative body for community legal centres across NSW. They represent and advocate for the centres that give free legal help across the state, they advocate for law reform and social justice, and they aim to improve access to justice for people in NSW. Their website has an online directory to help match you with a community legal centre that can support your needs.
The HIV AIDS Legal Centre (HALC) is a not-for-profit, specialist community legal centre. They provide free legal assistance to people with HIV, undertake community legal education and law reform activity relating to HIV and hepatitis, and they provide legal training, education, and experience to their employees and volunteers.
The Inner City Legal Centre is a not-for-profit community legal centre offering free legal services to residents of Sydney's inner city and eastern suburbs. It also provides specialised support to the LGBQTI+ community, trans and gender diverse individuals, sex workers, and offers employment law advice across New South Wales.
